GERMANY: A former estate agent just won control of a state parliament chamber, the first time since 1945. 👇
Tobias Rausch took 48 votes in Saxony-Anhalt, giving AfD formal legislative power for the first time.
The speaker sets the agenda, controls debate, and decides which bills reach the floor.
Three more eastern states vote this year, and AfD is polling first in all of them.
Would you stay or leave if the far right controlled your regional government?
◆ Why it matters
The speaker controls which bills get debated, who gets recognized on the floor, and the procedural machinery that turns ideas into law. AfD now holds that lever in one state. If the party replicates this result in Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg later this year, it will control the legislative process across Germany’s entire eastern flank, even if coalition arithmetic keeps it out of executive power.
