DR CONGO: The virus has now killed more people here than in any previous outbreak on record.

More than 10,000 have contracted Ebola since this wave began, with over half now dead.

The scale points to overstretched health networks, fragile containment, and communities still beyond reach.

Without mass deployment of vaccines and isolation units, that 5,000 will climb fast.

◆ Why it matters

Congo’s health system was already fractured by conflict and poverty, so containment depends on outside medical teams and vaccine supply chains that move slowly. The fatality ratio, above 50 percent, suggests many cases are detected too late or not treated at all. Every week of delay raises the chance this spills across a border into Uganda, Rwanda, or beyond.
