MOSCOW: Russia just handed over a captured American with no trade, no ransom, no public price.
Stephen Hubbard, 74, a former teacher held by Russia, walked free while Trump’s envoy sat down with Putin in the Kremlin.
Moscow usually extracts something for every prisoner it releases. This time it chose to give one up for nothing on paper.
Either Trump’s team already paid in private, or Putin is opening a channel and wants Washington to notice.
◆ Why it matters
Russia does not release American captives as a goodwill gesture. Every previous swap, from Griner to Whelan, came with a hard trade attached. If Hubbard walked out while Trump’s envoy was still in the room, Putin is either collecting on a deal already cut behind closed doors, or he is signaling that direct access to Trump changes the terms. Washington will now face pressure to reciprocate, and every other detained American becomes a bargaining chip in whatever comes next.
